DENTISTRY, WHERE THE ALTERNATIVE IS
HEALTH
|
BASIC COMPARISION
BETWEEN
Microcurrent
Electrical Therapy (MET)
VS
Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve
Stimulation (TENS)
ORIGINS
Note:
electromedicine
has been used
for at least 2,000 years.
|
TENS
Originally used in 1800's through
circa 1920's, but modern TENS was
"rediscovered" in 1967 as
a presurgical screening method for
dorsal column stimulator implants
when it was found that the transcutaneous
application worked as well as the
implants. |
MET
Originally used for healing non-union
fractures in Japan in 1940's, used
in basic science research in U.S.
since 1950. First commercial home
care unit introduced by EPII in 1982. |
Specifications
|
2 Hz - 1,000's
Current of approximately 60 mA 9 volts
average Pulse width of 250 - 400 µS |
Usually low 0.5 Hz (to
100 Hz) Current of 10 - 600 microamps
(µA) 11 - 14 volts preferred
Pulse width of 500,000+/- µS
|
| Perception |
Adjusted to "maximum
comfortable tolerance". |
Sub-sensory or just
barely perceivable. |
| Indications |
Temporary symptomatic
relief of acute, chronic, and post-operative
pain. |
Long term relief of
pain and acceleration of the healing
process. Some products have applications
that also control anxiety, depression,
and insomnia. |
| How
Supplied |
Home care only. Clinical
treatments are not practical. |
Clinical use by health
care professionals and home care. |
| Comments
|
No residual effect;
like eyeglasses, must be worn constantly.
Like drugs, tolerance is a problem.
Electrodes become expensive over time. |
Cumulative effects.
No tolerance. Chronic conditions usually
respond best to brief 20 minute (or
less) treatments on alternate days.
Uses electrodes or probes. Less usage
overall and use of probes makes microcurrent
much less expensive over time. |
Advantages
of Alpha-Stim® 100 microcurrent
electrical stimulation therapy
- Short treatment time of 1 -
20 minutes typical, every other
day.
- Less expensive due to use of
low cost felt electrodes that
use saline as conducting medium.
- Less expensive due to more
universal efficacy.
- Expert clinical and patient
support at no extra charge.
- More research on a greater
range of applications than any
other stimulation technology.
- Ongoing research including
a comprehensive pain study at
a V.A. Medical Center), a Workman's
Compensation (cost-containment)
study by the City of Baltimore,
and a study for strengthening
the immune system of AIDS patients
in Los Angeles.
- Used by the Dallas Cowboys
and other professional sports
teams. Video of Emmitt Smith using
the Alpha-Stim® 100 is available.
